Bill Gates has announced that he will invest $2 billion in renewable energy breakthrough projects, although he has rejected calls to take away his other investments from fossil fuel companies.
Gates said that doubling his current investment portfolio in renewables over the next five years was a bid to "bend the curve" on tackling climate change.
However, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has $1.4 billion invested in fossil fuel companies, including BP. Bill Gates has since rejected calls to take this investment away on the basis that it would have little impact.
Gates also stated that there was an urgent need for "high risk" investments in breakthrough green energy technologies, and that this was where the latest investment would largely go. He also stated that innovation was the only way to reach a positive outcome on carbon emissions.
