BC Hydro has announced the launch of its first round of private-built power generation projects in 15 years, saying that these will cost taxpayers less than the last time.
BC Hydro said that it has signed 10 new PPAs with private sector companies. Nine of the new projects are wind farms and one is solar. These projects will have a combined capability of generating 4830 GWh annually, at a lower cost than current plants.
BC Hydro said: “The weighted average levelized price for these successful projects is C$74 per MWh, which is around 45 per cent lower than the contracts awarded in our last call for clean power.” It added that “nearly all” the projects have First Nations majority ownership, representing between C$2.5 billion and C$3 billion in First Nations equity.
