He says the country’s power generating capacity is currently 6500 MW, and that the country may be regarded as “the country with the largest energy capabilities in the [Caspian] region.”

Azerbaijan’s power grid has expanded by 2300 MW over the past seven years, which had been made possible due to the reconstruction and modernisation efforts, in addition to the construction of new generation.

Abbasov said that a 20 per cent increase in the country’s power generating capacity would be achieved from the commissioning of the Janub power plant in the third quarter of 2012, and construction of a second hydro plant at Azerenergy’s 6500 MW Azerbaijan Thermal Power Plant.
