Coal-fired power generation has fallen below 50 per cent of Australia’s power mix for the first time ever, according to a report from Bloomberg .
Coal accounted for 49.2 per cent of electricity generation in the week 25th-31st August, marking the first time it has fallen below 50 per cent on a weekly rolling basis, according to data from Open-NEM .
High winds in Victoria and Tasmania enabled wind farms to generate just over 25 per cent of power during the period.
Coal-fired power generation fell to 56 per cent in 2023, down from 87 per cent in 2006. Wind and solar had a combined output of 31 per cent in 2023.
