The plant is currently being built by a consortium of Metka SA and Metka Overseas in Iraq’s Anbar province for the Ministry of Electricity of Iraq and is due to be commissioned in 2016.

Alstom will supply four GT26 gas turbines, four Heat Recovery Steam Generators (HRSGs), two steam turbines and six air-cooled turbogenerators under the agreement.

The Al-Anbar plant will provide an essential electricity boost to the Iraqi grid and will be one of the largest combined cycle plants in Iraq.

Alstom is currently also constructing the 728 MW Al-Mansuriya gas fired power plant in the Diyala Governorate, northeast of Baghdad and recently signed a contract for the 740 MW Zubair plant with ENI Iraq B.V.

“The Middle East is the most promising market for gas-fired generation and we are extremely pleased at expanding our presence in this region. Alstom has been a steady partner in the reconstruction of Iraq’s energy infrastructure and we are confident that our superior technology will make Al-Anbar a flagship project for the country,” said Senior Vice-President of Alstom’s Gas business, Steve Meszaros.
