The province of Alberta in Canada has selected Capital Power, EDP Renewables Canada, and Enel Green Power North America in the first round of the province’s Renewable Electricity Programme to provide around $1 billion of investment in green power generation.
The companies proposed bids offering record low renewable electricity pricing in Canada. They will develop approximately 600 MW of windpower projects throughout Alberta.
Capital Power has bid to develop the 201 MW Whitla windpower project located 60 km southwest of Medicine Hat, Alberta, while EDP Renewables will build a 248 MW windfarm at the Sharp Hills project, approximately 50 km north of Oyen. Enel Green Power will construct the 115 MW Riverview windfarm and Phase II of Castle Rock Ridge windpower plant.
The programme is expected to support development of 5000 MW of renewable power capacity to reach a target of 30 per cent sustainable energy by 2030. It is also expected to add at least $10 billion into the economy.
Rachel Notley, Alberta Premier, said: “This highly competitive programme is attracting investment from Alberta and around the world, creating new jobs in our province while getting Albertans the most renewable power generation for the lowest cost.”
