The Ministry said that these projects will have a combined capacity of 8 MW, and will be located in Paktika, Uruzgan, and Farah. Due to a lack of in-country generation capacity, Afghanistan relies heavily on distributed generators, and it is significantly dependent on importing electricity from neighbouring countries. Afghanistan currently meets 75 per cent of its electricity needs from Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, and Iran.

The UN stated in 2023 that Afghanistan is facing a major energy crisis, with only 40 per cent of households in the country having access to electricity.
