Dr Thani bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi, Minister of Climate Change and Environment for the UAE, said that Abu Dhabi would soon receive a 2GW solar power plant to be built in the capital’s Al Dhafra region. He said: “This new solar plant will eclipse the record-breaking 1GW Noor Abu Dhabi plant.”
The news follows the start of commercial operations at Noor Abu Dhabi , a $871 million 1177MW single solar power plant built by a joint venture of Abu Dhabi Power Corporation and a consortium of Japan’s Marubeni Corporation and China’s Jinko Solar Holding.
Noor Abu Dhabi was built as part of the UAE’s Energy Strategy 2050, launched in 2017 to increase the contribution of clean energy in the country’s total energy mix to 50 per cent by 2050 while reducing the carbon footprint of power generation by 70 per cent.
